In the Japanese language Pecha Kucha is the onomatopoeic equivalent of the English word chit-chat, or chiacchiera in Italian, and a PK evening is based precisely on chit-chat, dialogue, relationships and exchanges. It represents a moment when architects, artists, designers, stylists, editors, photographers, students and any other creative sort of person, can get together and can freely present their ideas, as well as their personal projects. Anything, as long as it is interesting, creative and with, above all, a desire to share.
PKN took shape in Tokyo in 2003 on the initiative of European architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham (KDa). The first happenings were held in their work space, the SuperDeLuxe, and then organised in several other cities – among them Sydney, Los Angeles, Paris, Oslo, Dubai, Washington, Berlin, just to mention a few – and arrived in Italy in February 2007, thanks to Anna Termite and Mirko van den Winkel, the export managers of Moroso.
The original character of the evening is due to the basic formula that precisely regulates the participants' presentations. It follows a 20x20 format: during the evening 20 speakers are given the chance to make their work known, displaying it with 20 slides for 20 seconds each.
The total time allowed is therefore 6 minutes and 40 seconds, timed by the sound of a gong that imperturbably indicates that the microphone must be passed on to the next speaker. Communication is revealed to be short, fast and direct. The rhythm is insistent and fascinating. The spirit is the same as the network, the contamination between different ideas, sectors and knowledge. A break including bar services between the first and second part increases the informal atmosphere. Think-and-Drink.
